Protect Your Nitrogen Investment

Oct 27, 2021

As we are fall planning for next year’s crop, one part of next year’s preparation is fall NH3 application. Typically, application begins around the first of November when soil temperatures fall below 50 degrees. Waiting to apply NH3 in cool soil temps will slow the process of nitrification, which is the conversion of ammonium-N to nitrate-N from soil microbes. Ammonium-N is not leachable, while nitrate-N is susceptible to leaching, so following management tactics to keep your nitrogen form as ammonium will ensure your nitrogen is available for next year’s crop.

With this cost of NH3 considerably higher than last year, it is more important than ever to protect every pound of nitrogen applied from nitrification loss. Using a nitrogen stabilizer such as Centuro will further slow nitrification, which will maximize your nitrogen use efficiency. Centuro can hold nitrogen in the ammonium form 3 times longer than nitrogen without a stabilizer, allowing for maximum availability for spring. By making the nitrogen stable for a longer period, Centuro has seen an average yield increase of 7 bushels per acre1.

Utilizing a nitrogen stabilizer also allows us to be an environmental steward to our land. Nitrate leaching is a major concern to the environment and following best management practices should always be considered. Compared to untreated anhydrous, Centuro reduced nitrate leaching by an average of 44 percent1. Adding Centuro with your fall or spring applied anhydrous will help you follow best management practices along with protecting your nitrogen investment.
